Newly discovered security flaws in Microsoft Internet Explorer can allow hackers to use your computer for illegal activities and/or steal your information. These issues can affect you even if you don't use IE for your web browser - it only needs to be installed on your computer. There are patches available.- know what to look for and what to do by reading the Computer Advisory Notification (CAN) located here.
Lately we've noticed a resurgence in the distribution of many of the e-mail hoaxes and scams that have circulated the Internet over the last few years. Look, it's simple - you're not going to get a $500 check from a major corporation, a free dream vacation at the Mouse House, or even free product samples just by forwarding along a chain e-mail to ten of your closest friends. The government isn't going to impose a five-cent tax on each e-mail you send just because an e-mail referencing a fictional House Bill says it will happen. And if you start deleting files on your computer because someone sent you an e-mail telling you that a file with a little bear icon is infected with a virus which can't be detected, well, we have a bridge for sale...(it's nice - it's in New York)...
If you don't have any idea what the above paragraph refers to, then let us be the first to welcome you to your first day on e-mail - you're really going to love it! For the rest of you, check the Symantec Hoaxes page by clicking here and get the low-down on all of those false "facts" before you waste your time (or your friends') reading, forwarding, or acting on another hoax e-mail.
Within a few days, we will experience the second anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Major anti-virus vendors are warning everyone to be aware of a surge of new 9/11-related viruses. Please be careful over the next week or so when opening strange e-mails and avoid opening attachments unless you are expecting them. Now would be a good time to update your computer's security if you haven't done so lately. Review our general security guidelines to learn how and why to secure your computer.
Protect your friends and coworkers by forwarding this message to other computer users who may also be affected by these computing issues.
